PRESIDENT / CLERK
A Haverhill resident, Suzanne has found ways to combine her interest in healthy living with her working life. She spent several years as Communications Director at the International Institute supporting various community health programs including the development of the Salud Latina Health Fair. For the last 18 years as Program Director/ Editor at LPS-Media, she has used her role as an instructor and television producer to share her passions of healthy food and community service with her students and their families.
Since 2010, she has dedicated herself to developing creative ways of encouraging people to realize the benefits to the health of the community and economy as a whole when supporting our local food resources with the co-op concept. As co-owner of Moderno Appliance and Furniture, she works with another co-op to bring affordable “green” products to an inner-city neighborhood while waiting for our co-op to open.
Suzanne holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology and Modern Languages with a Minor in Linguistics. She has been a certified AEA Instructor for more than 20 years and holds various certificates in Media and Video Production. She has been a proud member of Frontier Naturals Co-op and Turtle Creek Co-op (Beloit, WI).
Swanna taught special education in public schools at both elementary and junior high levels for 15 years. She also worked with pre-school handicapped children as well as in a Job Corps site teaching reading to 18 to 26 year olds.
Swanna recently retired from her role as the Executive Director/Community Leader of L’Arche Irenicon, Inc. in Haverhill, MA. She has had various roles since 2002 ranging from live-in support staff to Program Coordinator to ED/Community Leader. L’Arche Irenicon is part of an international federation of L’Arche communities in which intellectually disabled adults live and create home with the assistants who support them. She has been touched by the mission and has grown into a more human person doing this work.
Swanna earned a BA degree in history at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1969 and a Master’s Degree in Learning Disabilities at Minot State University in Minot, N.D in 1984.
